Flight Lieutenant John Wyness Sim GM RAFVR.

The London Gazette states, “This officer has shown keen devotion to duty and has courageously dealt with unexploded bombs. As he lacked special training and experience in dealing with bombs, he displayed outstanding courage and initiative.”

John Wyness Sim GM RAFVR

John Sim, usually known as Jack, was the Armaments Officer at No 8 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) Montrose having graduated from No 1 Air Armaments School on May 1940. Although this appointment would have given him a thorough background in inspecting/repairing RAF air weapons and explosives etc, it would not at that time, have qualified him for bomb disposal duties, a fact referred to in the London Gazette. Following an air raid on 23 July 1940, one bomb exploded near the runway. Flt Lt Sim defused an unexploded 500 Kg bomb from this raid which had been found close to Kinnabar wireless station a short distance from the airfield. On the evening of 25 October 1940, he swiftly dealt with three unexploded 250Kg enemy bombs. On 2 November, he dealt with a fourth unexploded bomb from that raid which had buried itself in the ground and lain undiscovered. He retired from the RAF as a Group Captain.

In June 2024, his medals were put on public display at the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre with the kind permission of his second wife and three sons.
