6025124 Sgt Kenneth Francis Cardy REME  attached 2nd (Armoured Reconnaissance) Battalion Welsh Guards.
North West Europe: On 9 April 19445 near Menslage, he was driving behind a tank which was hit by 2 high explosive shells and burst into flames.  All the crew were wounded.  Sgt Cardy, completely disregarding his own personal safety since he was under heavy shell fire from heavy calibre German guns, rushed to the tank and, singlehanded, fought the flames and put them out, thereby saving the vehicle which could, therefore, be repaired and was actually put back into service the next day.  Later in the same evening this NCO recovered a tank under observation of the enemy who were putting down fire upon the area where he was working.  Sgt Cardy deliberately drove his Armoured Recovery Vehicle between two blazing houses to recover this tank although he was under intense shellfire at the time.  By this cool and gallant action, and by showing such a very great devotion to duty, he had saved two tanks for the Battalion at a time when it was extremely short of vehicles.  London Gazette 12 July 1945

Ken Cardy was a long time member of the League, he died at home on 29 March 2014.
