Background: The last Level 2 award introduced before the re-organisation of the honours system in 1992. The medal filled a gap for the RAF, prior to its institution there were no Level 2 awards available for gallantry in action against the enemy for NCO´s and men. Prior to this they had only the DFM and VC. With the exception of one award this medal was only awarded during WW2, one award being to the Army (Glider Pilot Regiment). The only award during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 2 was to Cpl John Desmond (Snowy) Coughlan of the Royal Australian Air Force for services in Vietnam. No longer awarded.
Design: The medal is identical to the CGM awarded to Naval personnel but the ribbon has a pale blue central stripe in place of the white.
